Here’s my list of fun facts about Germany that will surprise you. I have personally experienced some of them and they literally blew my mind as I couldn’t digest that this is true for Germany.
- A beer glass in the very famous Oktoberfest is almost 1 liter.
- Most parts of German highways do not have a speed limit. This means you can drive – if your car allows – even 300 kph.
- There are over 300 kinds of breads (BROT) in Germany. You’ll find at least 30 varieties in a small bakery itself.
- You can drink in public anytime during the day.
- Mercedes are used as taxis here. I sat in one and was blown away. This was the first time I sat in a Mercedes.
- Sausage and beer is a typical breakfast in some parts of the state of Bavaria.
- More than half of the German vocabulary is shared with English yet there are words describing something that doesn’t exist in English or any other language.
- The famous beer festival Oktoberfest actually is organised in September.
- Angela Merkel the former Chancellor of Germany was referred to as ‘Mutti’ (short for mum – Mutter)
- There are more than 30 dialects of German some being so different from the others that you would be forced to think that it is a different language.
