5 Things to Consider when Applying for University

By

This blog post is for you if you are right now applying for a university – abroad or anywhere in your country! Here are some of the crucial points that you must consider:

  1. Apply to all types of universities/colleges: It is enticing to apply to the very best and cream universities (who wouldn’t do that right?) and ignore the other universities. Just like you, there are thousands of other students applying to the top-notch brand universities with the dream of having admitted there, so the acceptance rate might be low. This is not to demotivate you but give you a reality check. You should indeed apply if you meet the qualifications but do apply to other universities and/or colleges as well.
  2. Check your suitability for the course: This is extremely essential. Do not apply to any university just because you heard it is good or your friends applied to it. Check whether the Uni/college offers what you’re looking for and if it is suitable for you. If you apply without considering the field of study you might end up losing 2-3 semesters and changing your field/uni.
  3. Make sure you’re aware of all expenses: Plan your expenses if you’re going to be a student. Make sure you know all sorts of expenses, from admission fees to tuition fees, to extra-curricular fees, to transportation costs, accommodation, etc. You’re an adult now and you must be capable of handling your own expenses. It does not only makes you responsible but it feels good to manage your own finances, income, and outgoings.
  4. Apply for scholarships all the time: Most of us stop applying for scholarships the moment we’re in the Uni/college as if there’s no option for having financial support from the government or a private firm. There are multiple scholarships that offer to help students for one semester or two or complete their thesis. Always keep your eyes and ears open for any types of scholarships you can apply to.
  5. Do it yourself (DIY): How much does it take to put your own efforts into your own application? It might feel like you are too young or naive to choose your universities, write your own application, and statement of purpose, get recommendation letters, create a resume, etc. But remember, you are not a pupil (school student) anymore. You are an adult who can do all of it. You might and will make mistakes and get rejected but in the end, this is all a process through which you will learn and earn experience. It is your future so it should be you who should be working on it, not someone else.
