CHRISTMAS in GERMANY – Learn GERMAN with me

It is Christmas time and in Germany it is one the most colorful, pleasant and beautiful time to be out, meet friends and family, go to restaurants, go to Christmas markets and relish the German cuisine. The best thing about Christmas in Germany is that it is not about Santa bringing gifts for kids, but about celebrating the culture and tradition with family and friends. So, let us learn some Christmas vocabulary so that next time you are in Germany and you are out with your friends you can impress them, and if you are not in Germany you can impress and share these wonderful German words with people around.

  1. Christmas – Weihnacht -> WINE+NAKHT
  2. Christmas tree – Weihnachtsbaum/Christbaum -> WINE+NAKHTS+BAAUM / KRIST+BAUM
  3. Holy evening – Heiligeabend -> HAII+LIGEY+ABEND (24th December is known as Heiligeabend)
  4. Christmas cookies – Plätzchen -> PLETS+SCHEN
  5. Santa – Christkind/Christkindl -> KRIST+KIND – he comes on the holy evening with gifts.
  6. Nikolaus – not Santa, he brings gifts on December 6th to kids.
  7. Christmas market – Christkindlmarkt/Weihnachtsmarkt
  8. Glühwein – Glow wine – GLEW+WINE – a beverage made with red wine, spices and raisins and is served hot
  9. Adventskalender – Advent calendar -> ADVENTS-KAALENDAR – A calendar with 24 windows for 24 days before Christmas.
  10. Candles – Kerzen -> KERTS-EY
  11. Merry Christmas – Frohe Weihnachten -> FROHEY WINE+NAKHT
